10 names with earnings moves, seasonal tailwinds, and breakout setups
We’re back with another Wednesday Watchlist from Dan Rawitch, founder of University of Options and longtime pro trader.
Every Wednesday (unless Dan’s out or the market’s too unstable)… he shares the major stocks and sectors he’s watching for potential trades.
This week’s theme: momentum meets macro, with AI, aerospace, and gold all catching fire.
Trending Leaders & Momentum Winners
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) – Top S&P 500 performer year to date (+109%), riding AI and data analytics hype. Post-earnings moves have made it a trader favorite. Super Micro Computer (SMCI) – AI hardware kingpin, up 93% year to date. Still volatile post-earnings, ideal for nimble trades. GE Vernova (GEV) – Clean energy spinoff from GE, up 100%+ year to date. Plays into 2025’s renewable energy boom.
Mid-Cap Movers with Tailwinds
Howmet Aerospace (HWM) – Lightweight aircraft parts maker with strong year-to-date growth (+64%). A pure-play on the current aerospace cycle. NRG Energy (NRG) – Utility strength and energy volatility create both defensive and active trade setups.
Bold Ideas: Blue-Chip & Growth Engines
Microsoft (MSFT) – Stable flight-to-safety with AI and cloud exposure. A favorite name when markets get choppy. Amazon (AMZN) – Bounced off earnings, strong liquidity, and often performs well in late summer trades. Nvidia (NVDA) – Still dominating headlines and momentum charts. Up 32% year to date with plenty of short-term trade setups.
Unusual Angles: Defensive or Contrarian Setups
Newmont Corp (NEM) – Gold is back in focus. Newmont is up 66% this year and tends to pop during inflation or risk-off conditions. Tapestry (TPR) – Luxury retail with a strong earnings beat and current breakout potential.
Seasonal Notes
Earnings continue to drive volatility, with names like Palantir and AMD seeing elevated options flow.
Utilities and staples often perform well in August. NRG is worth keeping on the radar for that reason alone.
